Why we introduced “Proof of Ownership” and why it matters for your pet

“Most microchip databases in the UK will let anyone register a chip with a name and email address. No checks. No evidence. No questions asked. Which makes them about as useful as a chocolate teapot when a lost pet actually needs finding.”

70%
of microchip records in the UK are out of date

2,400
pets go missing in the UK every year

Here’s the problem

Your dog gets lost. Someone finds them, takes them to a vet, and the chip gets scanned. Great news, except the number leads to an email address that bounces, a phone that’s been disconnected, and an address where three different families have lived since the original registration.

This is happening. Right now. Across millions of records on databases that were registered years ago, never updated, and never verified. Around 70% of microchip records in the UK are out of date and every single one of those is a pet that might not make it home.

What we’ve done about it

We’ve launched “Proof of Ownership” on Pet Database. It’s optional and it takes about 30 seconds. Pet owners can now upload a supporting document alongside their microchip record (a vet invoice, adoption paperwork, a pet passport, insurance documents) anything that shows a genuine connection between you and your pet.

It means your record isn’t just a name in a box. It’s a verified, trustworthy entry that the right people can rely on when it matters most.

What counts as proof?

Less than you’d think. Any of these will do:

  • Vet invoice or registration letter from your veterinary surgery
  • Adoption paperwork from a rescue centre
  • Breeder contract or sale receipt
  • Pet passport
  • Insurance documents with your name and pet on them

You upload it once. We store it securely. Job done.

Isn’t this already required by DEFRA?

Good question. DEFRA requires databases to take “reasonable steps” to verify keeper details. In practice, most interpret that as: accept a declaration and move on. We’ve gone further because we think “reasonable steps” should mean something.

Pet Database is fully DEFRA-compliant. This isn’t us ticking a box, it’s us raising the bar.

Do I have to do this?

No. Registration on Pet Database remains instant, as always. “Proof of Ownership” is there for owners who want their record to carry a bit more weight. Think of it as the difference between saying “that’s my pet” and being able to prove it.

No barriers. No faff. Just a better record.
