Petlog: How much does it cost, and what's the alternative?
It's easy not to think about ongoing costs until you need to change your address, phone number or email. Since January 2026, Petlog have charged for that by the year, through two subscriptions at £15 and £39. Pet Database charges £20 once, with updates included for life. Here's how these two leading microchip registration services compare.

Petlog vs Pet Database at a glance
At first glance, Petlog and Pet Database have a lot in common. Both are DEFRA-compliant UK microchip databases, and both help reunite lost pets with their owners. The biggest difference isn't registering your pet, it's what happens afterwards. Petlog restructured on 13 January 2026, discontinuing the one-off Premium upgrade in favour of two annual plans that renew automatically. Pet Database charges once, with updates included for life and nothing to renew.

How Petlog pricing works
Petlog restructured on 13 January 2026. The one-off Premium upgrade of around £19.95 was withdrawn and replaced by two annual plans, and Petlog no longer publish a free tier: their own page routes new customers to one of the two. Most first registrations were bundled into what a veterinary practice or breeder charged to implant the chip, though what that legacy record allows without a plan is not clearly published.
- Online account access to check and update your details
- Multi-pet management as standard
- Annual reminders to review your details
- Holiday mode for temporary keepers
- Everything in Secure
- Missing-pet posters and social media alerts to share locally
- Alerts to vets, wardens, welfare organisations and police within 20 miles
- Notified if your pet's chip is scanned, and where
- Includes an update to the microchip registration name and the fee for an annual subscription plan
- The current keeper starts it, and the new keeper confirms by email
- Only one pet can be transferred at a time
Secure and Reunite both renew automatically, so cancelling means stopping the next renewal. Contact Petlog through your account or on their general enquiries line, before the renewal date. Cancelling the plan is not the same as closing the record: your pet stays registered with Petlog until you ask them to remove it, which is a separate request. Alternatively, you can register with us, and with your consent, we'll reach out to Petlog on your behalf to transfer the registration.
Pet Database Membership
Your details will change over the years. Keeping your pet's microchip record up to date shouldn't cost you each time they do. With Pet Database, you pay once and can keep your details up to date whenever you need to. Standard membership costs £20. Or choose the £30 Premium Bundle to add a Smart Pet Tag and perks from partner brands.
What customers say about Petlog and Pet Database
Both Petlog and Pet Database are DEFRA-compliant UK microchip databases trusted by thousands of pet owners. While they take different approaches to pricing and membership, both are established providers with strong customer feedback. Pet Database holds the higher score of the two, at 4.8 out of 5.
How to move your pet's record to Pet Database
Moving your pet's record from Petlog is simple. The chip stays in your pet and keeps the same number, and because any DEFRA-compliant database can register it, you can bring the record across without contacting Petlog first. Most transfers take under five minutes, though some take longer if the current keeper needs to respond or evidence of keepership is required.
Petlog vs Pet Database: your questions answered
A discontinued product. Petlog Premium was a one-off upgrade of around £19.95 covering a pet’s lifetime. Petlog withdrew it on 13 January 2026 and replaced it with two annual subscriptions, Petlog Secure at £15 a year and Petlog Reunite at £39 a year.
Petlog publish no free tier. New customers from 13 January 2026 are routed to Secure at £15 a year or Reunite at £39 a year. Older registrations made through a veterinary practice or breeder may sit on a legacy record, but what that record allows without a plan is not clearly published.
Yes. Your record is not tied to the database it started on. You can register the same chip number with any DEFRA-compliant database, and you don't need Petlog's permission. The chip stays in your pet with the same number. Close the old record and cancel any plan separately.
General enquiries are on 01296 336579. Lost and found pets have a separate 24-hour line on 01296 737600. There is a webchat on their contact page, subject to availability. Post goes to The Royal Kennel Club, Gatehouse Way, Aylesbury, HP19 8DB.
Log into your Petlog account and edit the record. Both Secure and Reunite include unlimited changes at no extra charge. Petlog do not publish a route to updating your details without holding one of those plans.
Secure and Reunite renew automatically, so cancelling means stopping the renewal. Contact Petlog on 01296 336579 or through your account, before the renewal date rather than after it. Cancelling the plan does not delete your pet’s record: it stays registered with Petlog until you separately ask them to close it. Check their current terms for notice periods.
No. Pet Database is a one-off payment: £20 for Standard, or £30 for the Premium Bundle, which adds a free Smart Pet Tag with lifetime service included, plus perks from partner brands. There is no annual fee, no monthly fee and no renewal date, so there is nothing to cancel later.
