How it works

The Pet Database lowdown.

A short introduction to microchipping

Heart
Keeping your pet's microchip details up to date is a legal requirement for all pets. Failure to have up to date details can result in a £500 fine!

Why is my microchip so important?

  • Keeping your details up to date is a legal requirement. All dogs since 2015 (and cats in 2023) need to be microchipped and have their details up to date on a compliant database, or face a fine of up to £500.
  • Your pet's microchip contains a unique 15 digit number that a professional can scan and view. They can then search for that unique microchip number against details held on any of the compliant databases such as Pet Database.
  • Vets/wardens/rescues will have access to these details and can look up your details so they can get in touch if your pet goes missing, or in order for you to prove the keepership of your pet.
  • Failure to ensure these details are up to date causes problems. Not only could you face a huge fine, but if your pet does go missing, it would prove difficult for a professional to safely return them home if they cannot get in touch with you.

How it works

Heart
The most important thing you can do to make sure you're reunited with your pet is to keep your details up-to-date on a trusted, compliant database.

What we do:

  • We'll automatically send 'Safety Pings' to you whenever your pet's microchip details are looked for.
  • We'll notify you when a pet professional logs on to access your contact details.
  • If you haven't already logged your pet's details with DogLost, do that as soon as possible, and we'll liaise with them to get your pet home.

What's a 'Safety Ping'?

Alert
Safety Pings mean you can keep track of where and when your pet's microchip has been searched-for, so you can stay on top of who's accessing your pet's details.

The future of pet safety

We've created Safety Pings, so even if the unthinkable happens and you become separated from your pet, you'll be notified the second their chip details are searched for, meaning you'll be one step closer to being reunited with your four legged friend.

Heart
It's quick and easy to register with us, we'll liaise directly with your old database to get you moved over.

Registering with Pet Database couldn't be easier. Just fill in a few details about your pet and we will get in touch with your existing database to let them know you've registered with us and check there are no anomalies on the account.

To avoid confusion, they'll be instructed to archive your details and they may be in touch to confirm this. The main thing is you don't need to do anything. Your data will be safe and secure with us, a Defra compliant database, and that is all you need to do!
