Your first reminder lands in 12 months. If you can’t remember the last time you looked at your pet’s record, today’s a good day to start.

The chip is just a number

Your pet’s microchip doesn’t hold your details, and it can’t track them. It holds a 15-digit number. Your name, phone number and address live on a database record linked to that number. The chip lasts for life, but the record doesn’t update itself: the chip can’t know you’ve moved.

Updating your details means you stay reachable when your pet is found

‍

Your vet, breeder or rescue centre chipped them. Keeping the record right is the part only you can do but it’s an easy detail to forget.

‍

1 in 5 pet owners think it’s their vet’s job.*

‍

It’s worth checking the record is in your name, that your phone number still works, and that the database is one of the DEFRA-compliant ones. Changed your mobile number? Almost half of pet owners don’t know that’s a reason to check*.
