The information allows the rehoming team to assess whether the home is appropriate for the specific needs of the animal. Applications are then reviewed by the management team. Rather than operating on a first-come, first-served basis, Longview Animal Centre focuses on selecting the applicant whose circumstances best meet the welfare needs of the animal. Factors such as the amount of time the animal would spend alone, access to secure outdoor space, the presence of children or other pets and the adopter's ability to meet future veterinary and care costs are all taken into consideration. If an application is considered suitable, a member of the rehoming team contacts the applicant for a telephone discussion. During this conversation, staff provide more detailed information about the animal's personality, behaviour, medical history and any ongoing care requirements. Applicants are encouraged to ask questions and discuss whether the animal is truly suited to their lifestyle, ensuring that expectations are realistic before the adoption proceeds. The next stage involves arranging an appointment for the applicant to visit Longview Animal Centre and meet the animal. These meetings allow staff to observe how the animal interacts with the prospective owner and provide an opportunity for both parties to become familiar with one another. In some cases, particularly with dogs, more than one meeting may be recommended to build confidence and ensure compatibility before a final decision is made. Before the adoption is approved, the centre also carries out a home assessment. Rather than relying solely on traditional home visits, Longview Animal Centre often uses virtual home checks, with applicants providing photographs or videos of their property. This enables staff to confirm that fencing is secure, accommodation is appropriate and the environment is safe for the animal's specific needs. Every animal receives a full veterinary health examination before leaving the centre. Where appropriate, animals are vaccinated, microchipped, neutered, treated for fleas and worms, and receive any necessary medical treatment before adoption.
